The Prudent Trustee: Evolution of the Long Term Investor

The role and responsibilities of fiduciaries have always been in evolution and flux. In complex markets with increasing relevance of “off balance sheet risk” (represented by climate change, pandemics and various other social/environmental considerations) means fiduciaries must take a long-term perspective and understand the deep relationship between a company’s financial performance and its performance relative to sustainability issues. This paper explores the evolution of fiduciary duty and its link to sustainable/impact investing.
